Residencies
As a funding and outreach strategy, AREA Chicago has started to develop our publications and associated public events in the context of various cultural institutions in the city. The institutions provide a charged and valuable context for meetings, interviews and public events and additionally offer funding for production. In exchange, AREA Chicago brings in groups and individuals from throughout the city into the auditoriums, galleries and meeting rooms of the institutions – activating them in ways which benefit the venues and are consistent with their missions.
In the summer of 2007, AREA Chicago did its first residency at the Hyde Park Art Center. In that period, in collaboration with the Stockyard Institute’s Pedagogical Factory exhibition, AREA Chicago developed a series of over 25 public events entitled the “How We Learn” series. Through this series, hundreds of individuals and groups from throughout Chicago and beyond were brought together to present and discuss about education, organization and participation. Presenters included Andrew Gryf Paterson, Josh MacPhee, Feel Tank Chicago, Waite White, Chicagoland Bike Mechanic Orgs, Chicago Underground Library, Mess Hall, Platypus, Free Geek, Chicagoland/Calumet Underground Railroad Efforts, Bronzeville Historical Society, Chicago Women's Health Center, The Odyssey Project, Stephen Haymes, Meredith Haggerty, Lavie Raven, Dave Pabellon, Scott Berzofsky, Dane Nester, Nicholas Wisniewski, Jesse Seay, Lou Mallozzi, Christina Kubisch Daniel, Kunle/Holger Lauinger, John Dewey, Charlie Vinz, Material Exchange, Nance Klehm, Vocalo.org Producers, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Counter Cartography Collective, and Kristen Cox of Fire This Time Fund.
