There are tons of great events coming up this month. After nearly a year of commemorating 1968 and examining its legacy, AREA is about to release a new issue of our magazine on that theme. We hope you join us on Dec 6th to celebrate with the Jane Addams Hull House Museum (our organizational partner on this project) and pick up AREA Chicago #7 hot from the presses. We are also planning to have our annual auction that evening - if you have a venue that could host 60-80 people on the night of 12/6 to raise funds for AREA's 2009 issues - please email areachicago@gmail.com. The only other event we are involved in this month is on the 22nd, the Annual Teachers for Social justice Curriculum Fair. So please come visit our booth at that event.
We are saddened this month by the passing of Ben Schaafsma, one of our office mates from the InCUBATE organization and past author for AREA. For more info on Ben see this link.

UPCOMING TAMMS YEAR TEN EVENTS
THE TAMMS YEAR TEN CAMPAIGN
In 1998, the first prisoners were transferred from prisons across the state to Tamms CMAX, in Southern Illinois. This new “supermax” prison, designed to keep men in constant solitary confinement, was intended for short-term incarceration. The IDOC called it a one-year “shock treatment.” Now, ten years later, over one-third of the original prisoners have been there for a decade. They have lived in isolation 24/7—no human contact, no phone calls, no communal activity.
Year Ten is a coalition of prisoners, ex-prisoners, families, artists and other concerned citizens who have come together to protest the misguided and inhumane policies at Tamms C-MAX, and to call for an end to psychological torture. We have initiated a program of cultural, educational and political events to publicize Tamms after ten years of operation.

TEACHING FOR FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE, Brunchluck/discussion Jackson Potter (Chicago Social Justice Schools Network) @ Mess Hall
Teaching for Fundamental Change is a discussion series for educators with the goal of understanding the crisis facing education and the movement that is developing nationally to respond to it. We are also discussing strategy about what kind of education and educational movement is necessary at this time.
This month we have invited Jackson Potter, Chicago Social Justice Schools Network Coordinator, to join us to consider the role of the Caucus of Rank & File Educators (CORE) and CORE's view of the relation of the union movement to education. The issue of privatization and charter schools has also been an important issue for this group and will continue in this discussion as well.
This program fits within the Mess Hall's tradition of "brunchlucks" - we ask all who come to bring a food item to share.
