The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago: A Multi-Sensory Journey
Through Chicago and Its Neighborhoods (SPC)
Monday, June 1–Wednesday, September 30, 2009
@ Chicago Cultural Center 77 E Randolph at Michigan Ave
2009 is the centenary of the publication of The Plan of Chicago. The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago: A Multi-Sensory Journey Through Chicago and Its Neighborhoods corresponds with the celebration of this historic event. An interactive installation at the Chicago Cultural Center Visitor Information Center (77 E. Randolph Street), The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago is part of the citywide summer tourism initiative, Explore Chicago: Take A Neighborhood Vacation (June 1–September 30). More than 40 artists and organizations have joined in creating this exploration of Chicago through the five senses. Visitors and locals can experience Chicago imagery, sounds, fragrances, flavors and textures captured in miniature neighborhood scenes such as a mapping of the tastes and recipes of Chinatown, and an exploration of East Garfield Park candy. SPC’s participating artists and organizations have designed installation pieces which invite people to interact with the sensory “artifacts” of Chicago in creative and imaginative ways, and to think about synesthetic connections with things that relate to Chicago. The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago is commissioned by the City of Chicago, and it is co-curated by Annie Heckman and Daniel Godston,
This exhibition features AREA Chicago's Notes for a People's Atlas of Chicago project

Let's Get Free
A Hip Hop Theory of Justice with Paul Butler
Monday, June 8
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Jane Addams Hull-House Museum
800 South Halsted Street
Chicago, IL
This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 312.413. 5353.
Light refreshments will be served.
Paul Butler's book Let's Get Free: A Hip Hop Theory of Justice is a controversial new critique of the criminal justice system. In this smart and provocative book, Butler, whose work has been covered everywhere from Harpers to 60 Minutes, combines anecdotes from the front lines and his own experiences as a black prosecutor in DC with an incisive take-down of America's "lock-'em-up" culture.
Butler, a former federal prosecutor and cutting-edge legal scholar offers new perspectives on snitching, drug prohibition, how technology can improve justice, and introduces the concept of jury nullification-voting "not-guilty" on principle-as a powerful way to protest unfair laws, and offers several innovative suggestions for undoing the damage of mass incarceration.
"[This book is] destined to make us all think in new ways about the concept of justice, the role of hip hop in American culture, and the power that everyday people have to shape and influence their environment." -Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Harvard University
This event is co-sponsored by The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum and The Public Square.

Community as Intellectual Space:
Critical Pedagogy and Community Building 5th Annual Symposium
June 12-14, 2009
La Estancia 2753 W. Division Street
Paseo Boricua, Chicago, Illinois, USA
About the Symposium
The theme of the Fifth Annual Community as Intellectual Space Symposium is Critical Pedagogy: Community Building as Curriculum. We will explore how a wide range of organizations utilize dialectical methods to engage with communities as the curriculum. Come explore with us how collective reflection through dialogue can lead to solidarity and transformation.
Significance
As professionals and institutions are engaging with communities to enhance the life chances and well-being of residents, we consider how strength-based approaches such as community-building and critical pedagogy can offer effective and sustainable change - not just locally, but among collaborators as well; and why this matters.

We invite you to join us to CELEBRATE EXPERIMENTAL STATION on Thursday, June 25, 6-10pm, at the Experimental Station. We are putting together what we think will be a truly memorable evening for our guests—small plates dining by chefs from such restaurants as Blackbird, Publican, The Parrot Cage and Sikia, Vie (Paul Virant) and Lula Cafe (Jason Hammel), Steve Edwards in conversation with author and historian Timuel Black, music by Baby Alright, a performance by the oh-so-sublime Echoes of Southern Africa, private wine and beer tastings, wine generously provided by Richard Driehaus, Goose Island beer, and more.
You may purchase your tickets for CELEBRATE EXPERIMENTAL STATION online at our website at www.experimentalstation.org.
CELEBRATE is intended to raise funds to help support the rich ecology of programs and activities at the Experimental Station—Blackstone Bicycle Works, the 61st Street Farmers Market, the Invisible Institute, an active events program, and a small-business incubator program. Since we launched our first programming in 2006, we have realized the efficiencies and dynamism of our model whereby a diverse array of activities and programs located under one roof gives rise to cross-pollination, innovation and collaboration. We look forward to continuing the experiment well into the future.
While the Experimental Station uses its financial resources most efficiently and we do all that we can to generate our own revenues, we remain dependent on the Experimental Station community—people like you—to help to make our financial ends meet. In 2009, we aim to fund our Executive Director position, a critical next step in our organizational development. You can assist us in taking this step by celebrating with us on June 25.
Once again, you may purchase your tickets for CELEBRATE EXPERIMENTAL STATION online by visiting our website at www.experimentalstation.org. Once you are there, just click on the "Make a Donation" button in the upper right corner and enter "Benefit Tickets" in the 'Purpose' line.

Think Galaticon Radical Leftist Science Fiction Convention, June
26-28, Roosevelt University
Think Galacticon is a literary science fiction convention that createsa space in which leftists can discuss politics and speculative fiction
in an intelligent, engaging, and fun fashion. There will be multiple tracks of programming that seek to expand the boundaries of sci-fi discussions. We will explore issues of oppressive hierarchies, confronting topics of race, gender, sexuality, class, and the environment as they relate to science fiction and fantasy, and more. A few panel highlights this year will be discussions on food production, climate change, and cultural appropriation issues.
Our notable guests this year include award-winning author Eleanor Arnason and activist and artist Josh MacPhee. Eleanor Arnason is a science fiction author who brings politics into her writing in thoughtful and engaging ways. Her works are subtly complex explorations of how cultures engage with colonialism, gender, and sexuality, and the compromises individuals must make to find their place within these cultures.
Josh MacPhee is an artist, activist, and sci-fi fan. He is the author of Stencil Pirates: A Global Study of the Street and editor of Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority and Reproduce & Revolt. He has curated numerous art shows focusing on political art, most recently Signs of Change: Social Movement Cultures 1960s to Now.

1.0 Scream at the Economy
Is a participatory project which invites people to call a phone number and scream at the economy. We want to utilize the scream as a primary accessible interface but also as an instinctive survival expression, as a warning of danger, and through considering the historical context and implications of the “Scream” in art history (such as in Munch's painting) that have become a kind of shorthand of modern alienation and despair, icons of anxiety and hopelessness.
The archived screams are recorded as mp3 files. On the web they will be used to create a musical composition by various international composers, that will be available to download for free beginning June 25, 2009 at www.floatinglabcollective.org
As a second action the musical composition will be played in the “screamer,” (see diagram) a portable speaker system, that will perform in public spaces in front of relevant financial institutions.
Detail Instructions:
1. Call this number: 646.402.5686 ext 90514 (24/7) to call to the United States from another country +1
2. Scream at the economy. To get a clear recording please back up a few inches from your phone before you scream.
3. The screams will be used to compose music. (6 international composers will use the screams as a source for the composition)
4. Download the music created from the screams (for free) beginning June 25, 2009 at: www.floatinglabcollective.org.
5. The music will be played as a performance in public space in front of financial institutions. Using the “screamer”, to play the compositions.
