Damian Turner was one of the founders of Southside Together Organizing for Power’s youth wing, Fearless Leading by the Youth (FLY). He was a talented musician, a beautiful person, a consistent and energetic leader in the struggle for human rights. He traveled with STOP to New Orleans as part of the fight against the demolition of public housing, sat-in at the Department of Housing and Urban Development to stop the foreclosure of Grove Parc, knocked on doors at a public housing complex in Lousiville, Kentucky, protested against the Republican National Convention in Minnesota, and was recently in Detroit at the U.S. Social Forum. Locally, Damian was a leader in the campaign to stop human rights abuses at the Audy Home Juvenile Detention Center. In the toughest of moments he could always be counted on to make people laugh. But when it was needed, he could be serious and break down difficult issues and organizing strategies in a way that made everyone listen. On Saturday, August 14th, Damian was in the wrong place at the wrong time and caught a bullet in the back during a drive-by shooting at 61st and Cottage Grove. He will be dearly missed and always remembered.
